Foxy Friends: Stiches and Hearts

I first stumbled across my next Foxy Friend through an Etsy treasury. It had the cutest little hand knit bow tie necklace. Bekah's Etsy shop, Stitches and Hearts, is filled with colorful, hand-knit goodies. Here's a little more about her...

Why don't you start by telling the readers a little bit about yourself.
My name is Bekah, I'm 26, and I live right outside of DC with my little husband (who also doubles and my men's etsy model), little dog (half black lab and half corgi), and little yellow bird. :-) We live in a little one bedroom apartment, but we have big dreams to buy a house very soon!!

If it helps describe my personality, I'm the kind of person who strongly believes socks don't have to be the exact same to match. :-)

I adore people, and community it very important to me. I guess you could call me an extrovert. :-D

I learned how to knit from my mother (my parents have a farm on the east coast of Virginia where they raise alpacas, and my mother hand dyes and hand spins her own yarn!). I soon realized knitting was the BEST, because it let me sit still without really sitting still. I am a very crafty person, but knitting is my favorite because it's portable, and it's just SO therapeutic. Also, I have always been more math based than art based (although I love to pretend I'm artistic), so knitting is great fun because of all the counting, graphing, and patterns involved!

You have a variety of products in your Etsy shop, which is your favorite to make?
Hands down, my gloves. there's something really exciting to me about adding the finishing touch buttons and trying them on! It never gets old. :-)

Describe your studio...
HAHAHA. My studio is wherever I am. I do most of my knitting on the metro (I commute to work) and while my husband is playing video games (I knit and help him out with the hard puzzles) and watching movies. I keep all my yarn in plastic bins in my closet. :-) This is the greatest thing about knitting, though, you don't need a stationary space for it - and that makes it feel a lot less like work and a lot more fun!

How soon after you started creating did you decide to turn your craft into a business?
Knitting was not my first thing I sold on Etsy - I dabbled in sewing, ribbon headbands, and jewelry making before I found my perfect niche. I, like a lot of people, came to Etsy not quite sure what would work for me - which I think is grand. Etsy can help you develop into a more mature crafter! I knew with knitting right away that I needed to sell what I made - otherwise I'd have PILES of gloves lying around my house, hahaha.

What else do you like to do when you're not working on your crafts?
I lead a youth group of middle school girls, whom I adore SO much. they teach me a lot more than I teach them. They are a huge part of my life, and I am always blown away by their spirits and smarts.

I also love to the play guitar and sing, cook, hang out with friends, go hiking, dye my hair every color I can think of, and eat ice cream. :-)

What made you decide on your shop name?
Stitches and Hearts -- Knitting takes a lot of time (about 5 hours for a pair of short gloves), and so I wanted to pick a name that expressed how in hand knitting, each little stitch is done carefully and adoringly :-)

What is the most difficult and your most favorite part of crafting as a business?
Difficult - the slow times and the fast times! When it's too slow, I only sell about one pair of gloves a month, which can be really discouraging. when it's winter right before Christmas, I have a hard time keeping up with orders, and stress to keep everyone happy.

Favorite - hands down when I get thank you letters and pictures - nothing makes me happier than knowing something I made made someone's day. :-)

What is your favorite:
a) scent? honeysuckle
b) movie? Gosh, this is a hard one! I could NEVER pick. I change it daily. I adore ambitious scifi, anything with the theme of broken families and people coming together to fix them, and of course, Disney and Pixar.
c) blog/website? Etsy is my favorite website, of course!!
d) guilty pleasure? Rush Hour 3 and microwaved brownies in coffee cups

Lastly, do you have any advice for fellow crafters/entrepreneurs just starting out?
Join a team or two or three! NOTHING will get you farther than finding a great group of people to help you and support you along the way. I like to brag that my Etsy team is so close, I could get lost and stranded anywhere in the world, and someone from my Etsy team would come and save me within the hour. :-) My teammates are some of the sweetest, funniest, most supportive people I know.
